Picking living room lamps is actually trickier than it might seem. Most home decorating articles basically treat lamps like furniture. In other words, they consider what lamp will look best when they are not even plugged in. In this article, I will assume you know what kind of style you are looking for and examine instead the lighting design decisions that go with choosing the right lamps for your living room.Light Levels: The first thing you'll want to consider is just how bright the lamps actually are. There is some variation on this with lamps that come with in-built dimmers or that allow for different wattages of bulb. However, the principles remain the same. In general, there are three things you might want to do with a lamp: decorate, illuminate the room, or use it for reading.If you are simply decorating with your lamp, the lights should be dimmer than the other light sources in your living room. By doing this, your light is still a source of light, but it does not interfere with the overall balance.
On the other hand, if you are using your lamps for illuminating your room, your lamps should be approximately as bright as the other sources of light in the room. A room where lamps are brighter than the other light sources tends to look odd, while in a room where lamps are dimmer, the lamps will fade into the background as decoration.If you are using them for reading, you should have a fairly bright bulb, but your primary focus should be on the beam of light that comes out of the bottom of your shade. I discussed them in the last section.Up and down lamps provide a combination of ambient light and task light for reading. In effect, they should be used when you wish to both read and supply ambient lighting without using a second source.Finally, there are diffuse lamps. These have a translucent shade that goes all the way around the light bulb. They provide omnidirectional ambient lighting.
